Frequently Asked Questions

Does a colonic hurt?

No! It can feel a bit weird for a few minutes at the start until you get used to it - but it's a gentle process, often described as a relaxing treatment. People wouldn't come back to see us if it was uncomfortable.

The speculum only goes into the botton an inch or so, it's the water that gently goes further washing out any rubbish and gas. Ans the speculum that goes into the bottom is smaller than what normally comes out so it's not uncomfortable.

What is a colonic good for?

A colonic can help with:

ContipationIBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Allergies and food sensitivities

Diarrhoea

Flatulence - smelly or otherwise!

Bloating

Weight issues

Skin problems

Migranes and headaches

Candida (thrush / yeast infections)

ME and chronic fatigue

Addiction issues such as alcohol and drugs

Candida - yeast infections

Arthritis, osteoperosis and other joint problems

Menstrual problems and menopausal symptoms

Body odour including Halitosis

Sleeping difficulties

Stress and anxiety

Many people feel better all over, as well as lighter and more comfortable. A colonic is a great kick-start to a diet or detox program.

What happens at my colonic appointment?

At your first appointment we will carry out a full consultation and a colonic. We will ask you to complete a health form and we will go through this with you, exploring the reasons why you've come in for a colonic and what we can do to help you. We may give advice as to changes in hydration, digestion and other habits may help with the issue you want help with.

You will get changed to have your colonic. We will give you a freshly laundered fleece that will keep you completely covered and warm during your colonic. Putting hte speculum in your bottom is painless and of course we use a lubricant to make it as easy as possible. Just about everyone is surprised at how quickly and easily this is inserted.

During your colonic you will be lying on your side and your back. At no point will you be on your front with your bottom stuck in the air - which is what so many people think when they come in!! We promise that you may lose some poo and gas but you'll never lose your dignity!

We use body temperature water that runs gently into the bottom to soak and remove anything we don't want there. It's a gentle procedure, helped by our gravity system, and should never feel uncomfortable. You will be able to see what's coming out, and we'll explain what's happening every step of the way.

How will I feel afterwards?

Most people feel lighter and less bloated afterwards and often feel like they have more energy. We can't guarantee it (of course!) but most people will feel a difference in the symptoms they came in for.

Will I be running to the loo afterwards?

No! You'll be able to continue your day as normal, with no urgency to run to the loo. Anything that wants to come out will have done so during the colonic or in the loo immediately afterwards.

Are Colonics safe?

At our clinic yes! Colonic irrigation has been around for hundreds of years, since 1500 BC, and thousands of colonics have been given safely. The water is pre-filtered and only enters the body using gravity pressure, so it's a gentle procedure.Other clinics use machines which have preset pressure gauges. We believe that everyones colonic treatment is very personal, and at The Northampton Colonic Clinic your treatment is tailored to meet your individual needs. For this reason we do not endorse machine led treatments, and our patients that have experienced the machine system agree with us!

Do you treat men?

Yes! When we first opened in in Northampton over 20 years ago our ratio was 95% women and 5% men. Within a short space of time that changed as colonics started being featured in Mens health magazines. Now our ratio is about 60% men and 40% women. You will be fully covered during your treatment and we will never see your 'bit's and pieces' - the same goes for women of course!

Are you washing all the good bacteria away when you have a colonic?

No - this is something that has been circulating around the internet ever since the internet was invented! The bowel is designed to move rubbish out so anything that comes out during a colonic is supposed to be leaving you! Good bacteria is constantly being produced from the food you're eating and if we were washing it out (but we're not!) would very quickly be replenished. For that reason we don't often recommend replacing good bacteria afterwards with probiotics but if we think it's appropriate we'll suggest it.

Do you use disposable equipment?

Yes! All our tubes and speculums and disposed of after each colonic at the Northampton Colonic clinic. You will see an unopened, sealed pack of tubes and speculum ready for your use when you come in for your appointment. We open this in front of you just before your colonic so you know that everything is new.

Do you offer any other treatments?

Within the Northampton Colonic Clinc we also offer allergy and intolerance testing, parasite testing and specific IBS courses. We are based within the Northampton Clinic which has been offering treatments for over 80 years and as such we are able to recommend other therapists if needed. We are an integrative health clinic which means we will refer to others if we feel they are better placed to help you. The Northampton Clinic website is here

How do I know if you're a reputable clinic?

With over twenty years of experience we can offer a range of solutions to match your particular issues. We work in a clinical setting (but still warm, friendly and welcoming!) to ensure that hygeine standards are strictly maintained. Even before Covid we were ensuring a clean environment but now every door handle, tiled wall, clinic floor and windowsill is cleaned between patients.
